System 1: Arctic and Nordic Seas
General objective:
Explore how ecosystem productivity, from virus, bacteria and phytoplankton to fish and marine mammals, and trophic interactions are influenced by the ocean physics and chemistry; particularly how thermohaline circulation and the advection of Atlantic and Arctic water through the system are influencing the marine ecosystem on interannual to multidecadal scales.
 Current priorities:
  • Determine quantitative relations between phytoplankton and zooplankton productivity in the spring bloom setting and in the subsequent setting of regenerated production.
  • Explore the seasonal dynamics and determine the quantitative role of the key species Calanus finmarchicus as food for larval, juvenile and planktivore fish.
  • Explore the specific role of ocean climate on plankton productivity from seasonal to multidecadal time scales.
